To appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, your pages need to be indexed by Google and eligible to show a snippet in Search. Google says there are no special requirements beyond that: the same SEO fundamentals apply, so the work is making helpful pages that clearly answer the questions, and the follow-up questions, people search for.

This guide covers what Google has said, the common Googlebot versus Google-Extended mix-up, how to write content that suits AI features, and how to measure results without guessing.

What has Google said about AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google’s guidance is short and worth reading closely. In summary:

  • There are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet.
  • The same SEO best practices apply: crawlable pages, helpful content, good page experience and accurate information.
  • Structured data must match visible content. Markup that describes things a visitor cannot see on the page is not a shortcut.

In other words, there is no secret AI Overviews ranking factor to chase. Google does not publish exactly how it selects the pages it links in AI features, so be wary of anyone who claims to know the formula. What you can control is eligibility and quality.

Googlebot or Google-Extended: which one matters?

This is a common source of confusion in AI Mode SEO, because two Google user agents sound similar:

User agent What it controls Effect on AI Overviews and AI Mode
Googlebot Crawling for Google Search Required. Googlebot powers Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Google-Extended Use of your content for Gemini training and grounding None. Blocking it does not affect AI Overviews or Search.

So if you want to opt out of Gemini training, you can block Google-Extended without hurting your AI Overviews eligibility. But if you block Googlebot, or block it by accident with a broad rule, your pages drop out of Search and out of AI features with it. Our guide to allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt shows safe example rules, and the free AI Crawler Checker tests your file.

Is your site technically eligible?

Before thinking about content, run through these checks for your most important pages:

  1. Indexed. Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console to confirm each key page is indexed.
  2. Not blocked. Check robots.txt, noindex tags and any firewall rules that might block Googlebot.
  3. Snippets allowed. A nosnippet meta tag, a data-nosnippet attribute on key sections, or a very low max-snippet value limits what Google can show from the page. Use these only where you really mean it.
  4. Content in the HTML. Important text should be readable without logins, and not only inside images or scripts that fail to render.
  5. Canonicals correct. Make sure the page you want shown is the canonical version, not a duplicate or parameter URL.

How do you write content for AI Overviews?

AI Overviews and especially AI Mode handle complex questions by breaking them into smaller ones. Someone in Sydney asking “Should I repair or replace a 12-year-old hot water system?” is really asking about cost, lifespan, efficiency, warning signs and who to call. Pages that answer those sub-questions clearly are more useful to that process.

  • Answer first. Open each section with a direct, two to three sentence answer, then explain.
  • Cover the follow-ups. List the natural next questions a customer would ask and answer each under its own heading.
  • Use clear structure. Descriptive H2s and H3s, short paragraphs, lists for steps, and tables for comparisons.
  • Be specific and accurate. Name services, areas served, conditions and limitations. Vague marketing copy gives a summary nothing to use.
  • Keep it current. Update pages when prices, hours or services change, and show when content was last reviewed.

What does “helpful, people-first content” mean in practice?

Google has long asked for content made for people rather than for search engines, and that still applies to AI features. A few practical tests:

  • Would a customer who landed on this page feel their question was fully answered?
  • Does it show first-hand experience, such as real photos described in text, specific processes or local knowledge?
  • Is it clear who wrote it and why they are qualified?
  • Does it add something beyond what is already on other pages, or is it a reworded summary?

Mass-produced pages that swap city names, or articles written around keywords rather than real questions, are unlikely to help. One strong page per real topic usually beats ten thin ones.

Does structured data help with AI Overviews?

Structured data helps Google understand what a page is about and who is behind it, but it is not a requirement for AI features and not a guarantee. Useful types for businesses include Organization, LocalBusiness and its subtypes, WebSite, Service and Person. Add properties like sameAs, address, telephone and openingHours.

Two cautions. First, markup must match what visitors see on the page. Second, Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites in 2023, so FAQPage markup can still help machines read your Q&A but you should not expect FAQ snippets. How do entity and local signals fit in?

For local questions such as “best family lawyer in London” or “late-night pharmacy in Dubai”, Google draws on more than your website. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate, and make sure your name, address and phone number match across your site, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and directories. Consistency helps Google connect all of it to one business. Read more in entity SEO for AI search.

How do you measure AI Overviews traffic?

Measure carefully here. Google includes AI features in Search Console’s overall web search data, so clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode appear inside your normal Performance report rather than in a separate filter. That means you cannot isolate them cleanly in Search Console today.

Practical ways to track progress:

  • Watch query trends. Monitor impressions and clicks for longer, question-style queries in Search Console.
  • Check by hand. Search your target questions regularly and note whether an AI Overview appears and whether your pages are linked. Results vary by location and over time, so record the date and place.
  • Track other engines too. Many of the same customers also ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, so measure across engines rather than relying on one.

Our guide to measuring AI visibility improvements covers a simple tracking routine. For Google’s separate assistant, see Gemini SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Google Search?

Not with Google-Extended, which only controls Gemini training and grounding. Snippet controls such as nosnippet or data-nosnippet limit what Google can show from a page, including in AI features, but they also affect your normal search snippets. Think carefully before using them on pages that bring in customers.

Do I need special schema markup for AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal Search eligibility. Structured data such as Organization or LocalBusiness can help Google understand your business, but it must match the visible content on your page and is not a guarantee of appearing.

Why does my page rank well but not appear in the AI Overview?

Google does not publish how it picks the links shown in AI Overviews, and the overview may draw on pages that answer a specific sub-question better. Check that your page directly answers the question and its follow-ups near the top, and that snippets are not restricted.

Is AI Overviews optimization different from regular SEO?

Mostly no. The same fundamentals apply: indexable pages, helpful content and accurate information. The main shift is in emphasis, towards clear direct answers, covering the related questions people ask next, and keeping your business details consistent across the web.
